Swindon Garden Rooms builds to any footprint your garden and the planning rules allow — but size is the decision people struggle with most at design visits. Too small and the room fights its own furniture; too big and you've paid for floor you never stand on and lost garden you miss.
This guide maps real uses onto real dimensions, based on the buildings we design most often.

The 10 × 8 question
Searches for '10 x 8 insulated garden room' come from the shed world — 10ft × 8ft translates to roughly 3m × 2.5m, which is exactly our most popular compact office size. If you're replacing a 10×8 shed, that footprint upgrades to a genuinely usable insulated room without taking any more garden.
Height matters as much as footprint: within 2m of a boundary the whole building must stay under 2.5m, which our designs achieve with warm-roof build-ups that keep internal height around 2.2m — taller feels airier, but only further from the fence.
Bigger isn't automatically better value either: the base, glazing and electrics exist at every size, so a 4m × 3m room costs perhaps 20% more than 3m × 2.5m — but a 5m × 4m annexe-scale building brings drainage, regs and cost step-changes with it.
